Fiery Confidence

‘Aren’t we lucky to be alive? To have life?’ ‘I was born like this. Why should I compromise myself?’ ‘You think because I’m a woman I’ll be persuaded to take less?’

All three of these quotes are raw, rousing and inspire reflection. So, we are born and we are so lucky to have been born. And, simply, we are born in the way we are born. We are born as women, as gay women. Then, society comes along with its social constructs, unjust systems and absurd primacies and tries to tells us we should be agreeable to taking less. Less money, less happiness, less sex, less self-worth, less education, less opportunities, less rights, less acceptance, less empowerment, less value…the list goes on. It’s up to us to challenge this configuration of the way things are, and I am sure we all do in one way or another. The most important concept to challenge is one that says we are worth less as it is the foundation for so many others. It is not until we embrace our true worth that we can demand others treat us as worthy. Because, despite our inherent worth, if we do not accept the value of our own being, others will never see us in the way we are meant to be seen. What would AL do? Well, AL knew her worth and challenged herself and others daily to view her in the correct way. Shall we strive for that level of fiery confidence? I think, yes. Sure, Mrs. Priestly will say, “You’re playing with fiyah!” To which we would respond, “Oh really? Oh good.”
