Fuck It.
AL and AW embrace. AW slowly walks away and into the carriage, rides off, and AL is left standing there alone. End scene. But what if the scene continued and took a different turn?
What if, as it continues…we see AL’s brow begin to furrow. She looks down at her empty hands and back up. Makes eye contact with AW as she journeys further and further away, and focuses on Ann's tears, which are now streaming down her face. The further AW gets, the deeper AL feels the pain of longing and lost love.
Suddenly, with a look of determination across her face, she whispers aloud through pursed lips, “fuck it,” swiftly pulls up her garments to free her legs from their constraint and takes off running. As she chases the carriage, AL calls out, “Hold on, wait! STOP!” The driver catches a glimpse of AL running behind them as he is veering around a bend and halts the horses. “Woahhhh. What on earth?” AL finally catches up to them, flings opens the carriage door and gently guides AW out of the carriage. By this time, AW is sobbing, and collapses into her arms as she exits. They hold each other.
AL then pulls away and looks into the carriage at Mr. Sutherland and his dreadful mother. “Please, continue on, Ann will be staying here, with me, as it is in her best interest.” Mr. Sutherland tries to argue, but AW stops him. “Please give my sister my sincerest apologies, but I will not be returning with you to Scotland. I belong here. This is my home and I will be well cared for. Thank you, goodbye.” AL then instructs the driver to continue on before Mr. Sutherland can mutter a word of disagreement, and they watch the carriage ride off. AL gently and discreetly places her hand on the lower back of AW and as soon as the Sutherland’s are out of sight, they embrace once more.
